Steel industry News
Just two days after the announcement of the nationwide quarantine in Italy, the first consequences appeared for the Italian steel industry.
The production activity at Alfa Acciai’s 1 million t longs asset in Brescia was stopped starting from 10 p.m. of March 10. Another asset of the group, Acciaierie di Sicilia (500,000 t of longs), is understood to be unaffected so far.
Another longs producer Ferriera Valsabbia issued today an official notice saying that “the spread of coronavirus and decision made in this regard by the competent authorities have for days affected the possibility of maintaining the regular production and commercial process.” As a result, the plant stoppage takes place today [March 11] at 10 p.m, Metal Expert learnt from the statement. The company is capable of producing up to 900,000 t of long products in Odolo.
Most market participants believe that more stoppages will follow, as increasingly more customers are forced to halt operations and deliveries are becoming more complicated because of restrictions and fears. “I think construction industry is frozen,” one producer told Metal Expert.
