What are the common faults of load sensors in the steel industry?

Signal output abnormality

Zero drift:In the steel industry environment, due to large temperature changes, electromagnetic interference and other factors, the load sensor may experience zero drift. This means that the signal output by the sensor is not zero when there is no load. For example, in the high-temperature workshop of a steel plant, the increase in temperature may cause the performance of the electronic components inside the sensor to change, causing the zero point of the sensor to shift. This fault will lead to inaccurate measurement results. When the booster arm is working, the load size may be misjudged, thus affecting the overload protection function, etc.

Output signal is unstable:Vibration at the steel production site, electromagnetic interference from electrical equipment and other factors may cause fluctuations in the output signal of the load sensor. For example, in a steelmaking workshop, the crane frequently lifts the ladle, and the strong vibration generated will be transmitted to the booster arm and its load sensor. At this time, the signal output by the sensor will fluctuate, unable to accurately reflect the actual load situation, making it difficult for the booster arm to operate according to the correct load information.

Linearity deterioration

The ideal output signal of a load sensor should be linearly related to the load it bears. However, in the harsh environment of the steel industry, such as long-term heavy load impact, contact with corrosive substances, etc., the linearity of the sensor may be affected. For example, during the loading and unloading process of steel, the booster arm often has to carry steel billets weighing several tons. Frequent heavy load impacts may cause plastic deformation of the elastic elements inside the sensor, destroying the linear relationship between the sensor output signal and the load. As a result, in subsequent load measurements, the signal given by the sensor cannot correctly reflect the actual size of the load, which in turn affects the precise operation and overload protection of the booster arm.

Overload damage

Although the load sensor itself has an overload protection function, in the steel industry, due to some unexpected situations, such as operating errors, equipment failures, etc., the sensor may be subjected to overloads exceeding its rated range. For example, when lifting large steel equipment, the booster arm may suddenly lose control, causing the sensor to be subjected to an impact force far greater than the designed load. This overload situation may directly damage the sensitive components of the sensor, such as the strain gauge being pulled off and the diaphragm of the pressure sensor being broken. Once the sensor is damaged, it will not work properly and cannot accurately measure the load. It needs to be replaced in time to restore the normal function of the booster arm.

Protective layer damage and short circuit

In the steel industry, sensors may be affected by metal dust, water splashes, chemical corrosives, etc. If the protective layer of the sensor is damaged, the internal circuit may short-circuit. For example, in a steel cutting and processing workshop, a large amount of metal debris is generated, which may scratch the protective shell of the sensor and enter the internal circuit. When the metal debris contacts the signal line or electronic components of the sensor, it may cause a short circuit fault, making the sensor unable to output signals normally.
