Steel mill roll classification

According to different classification standards, steel mill roll can be divided into the following categories:

• Classification by use:

Work rolls: directly contact and roll metal. usually located at the outermost layer of the rolling mill.

Backup rolls: support work rolls, prevent bending. usually located on the inner side of the work rolls.

Intermediate Rolls: Used in multi-roll mills, located between the work rolls and the backup rolls, and play a role in transmitting pressure.

• Classification by material:

Cast steel roll: Made of cast steel, with high strength and wear resistance, suitable for high-load rolling environment.

Cast iron roll: Made of cast iron, with good fatigue resistance, suitable for medium and low load rolling environment.

Alloy roll: Adding different alloy elements, such as wear resistance and heat resistance, improves the roll’s performance.

• Classification by rolling process:

Hot rolling roller: used in hot rolling process, can withstand high temperature and high pressure, suitable for the production of hot rolled steel plates, hot rolled steel strips and other products.

Cold rolling roller: used in cold rolling process, has high surface hardness and finish, suitable for the production of cold rolled steel plates, cold rolled steel strips and other products.

• Classification by surface hardness:

Hard alloy roll: The surface hardness is extremely high, suitable for high-precision and high-requirement rolling processes.

Semi-hard alloy roll: The surface hardness is moderate, suitable for rolling processes with general precision requirements.

Soft alloy roll: The surface hardness is low, suitable for rolling processes with low precision requirements.
