Converter & Ladle Refractory Trial — On-Site Installation Update

Our refractory installation team reached a key milestone at the customer steel plant. Over the past 24 hours we completed two critical phases of the basic oxygen furnace (BOF) rebuild: furnace bottom masonry and the first six courses of the converter working lining. Tomorrow we continue with layers 6 through 12 to close out the lining system before first heat.

Today’s installation progress

Furnace bottom masonry — completed.

The hearth pad was laid with high-purity magnesia-carbon bricks and a phosphate-based mortar system. Joint thickness was held within ±1 mm; absolute level deviation remained under 2 mm across the full hearth diameter.

Converter wall, layers 1–6 — completed.

The first six courses of the working lining were installed with our MgO-C refractory bricks (magnesia content ≥97%). Our installation engineer verified brick-to-brick gap, vertical alignment and wear-zone orientation on every course. All joints were hammered-tight — no shims, no backfill.

Tomorrow’s plan

Wall layers 6–12 — on schedule.

The remaining courses will be laid with the same magnesia-carbon grade, followed by the barrel patch and taphole assembly. Furnace delivery is targeted for 06:00 local time.

Customer baseline performance

  • Converter campaign life: 212 heats
  • Ladle campaign life: 36–38 heats

The plant asked us to match or beat those numbers while pricing below their incumbent supplier. Our engineer Mr. Wang reviewed the previous supplier’s brick specifications on site and confirmed the material quality was technically comparable — the former supplier simply charged more without offering a performance advantage.

Our value proposition

We are supplying the converter bricks at a directly competitive price point. First-campaign performance is expected to match the 212-heat baseline. Once operating data, wear-zone photos and post-mortem samples return from this trial, our refractory engineering team will execute a targeted mix-design and installation upgrade aimed at 1.5× campaign life extension — putting the converter target at 318+ heats and the ladle target at 54–57 heats on the next campaign.

Why campaign life matters for steel mills

Refractory campaign life is the single largest variable cost driver in BOF and ladle operations. A 50% extension at constant lining cost changes the economics: fewer shutdowns, lower relining labor, higher availability and lower specific refractory consumption (kg/ton steel). For mills currently running 200+ heats, the next step-change is structural, not incremental.
