Factors affecting the service life of ladle refractory materials

Ladle Refractory

The temperature difference between the ladle working layer, permanent layer and molten steel is very large, resulting in the part of the ladle working layer in contact with the molten steel being severely damaged by thermal shock due to the rapid increase in temperature, thereby reducing the service life of the refractory materials of the ladle working layer and permanent layer.

The chemical damage of the ladle is mainly due to the chemical reaction between the refractory materials of the ladle working layer and the molten steel, which produces some substances, so that the refractory materials of the ladle working layer are eroded less and less, and finally the working layer lining has to be replaced.

The temperature and stress analysis of the lining is an indispensable analysis factor in studying the longevity of high-temperature industrial furnace linings. In general, the thermal insulation performance, lightweight and longevity of the ladle are closely related. With good thermal insulation performance and uniform temperature distribution, the thermomechanical stress of the ladle will be reduced accordingly, so that the life of the ladle will be extended accordingly.

The specific influencing factors are as follows:

  • Type and quality of refractory materials.

Previous studies have shown that the slag line and side wall of the ladle are the most corroded. Therefore, the refractory materials in these two parts must have good corrosion resistance. The bottom of the ladle has the greatest strength. Therefore, when selecting the refractory lining, the compressive strength of the refractory material of the bottom lining must be very good. The C and SiO2 content of the ladle lining; the selection of the physical parameters of the ladle lining will also affect the service life of the ladle. I will not introduce it in detail here, but will describe it in the following chapters.

  • Design of the ladle lining structure.

Adding insulation and heat insulation layers can reduce the damage of the ladle’s thermal stress to the ladle lining, thereby extending the life of the ladle.

  • Ladle lining masonry technology.

The traditional ladle structure lining has three traditional brick structures, and the newly developed integral structure and traditional masonry methods are mixed to form the lining masonry method.

  • Equipment operation and maintenance.

The service life of the ladle is also related to the capacity of the ladle. Regular drying and operation maintenance of the ladle can also effectively extend the service life of the ladle lining, thereby extending the service life of the ladle.
