Laser cladding and surface strengthening technology

Reducing costs and increasing efficiency is the ultimate goal pursued by enterprises. Looking at many major technological breakthroughs in the history of steel industry technology, such as hot-rolled strip, converter steelmaking, continuous casting and rolling, the primary motivation is to reduce costs. Today, when metallurgical technology is quite mature, using remanufacturing technology to extend the service life of core components of metallurgical production lines can not only improve the performance of new products, but also repair waste products and extend product life. At the same time, it effectively reduces equipment maintenance and downtime, and improves production efficiency.

The application of laser cladding and surface strengthening technology in the steel industry has become very common, including: laser cladding/repair, laser surface quenching/strengthening, laser surface alloying, etc.

Hot rolling roller table (laminar cooling roller)

Application: Laminar cooling rolls after hot-rolled strip finishing and before coiling.

  • Original treatment process: thermal spraying

Disadvantages: Pitting after water erosion, yellowing of roller surface, partial peeling, reduced wear resistance of roller surface, easy to scratch the plate surface over time and reduce the quality of plate and strip.

  • New treatment process: laser cladding

Advantages: wear-resistant, corrosion-resistant, no peeling, smoother with use, good roller surface quality, guaranteed plate and strip quality, long service life.

Hearth roller

Application: CSP furnace bottom roller

  • Original processing technology: new machine, product size is ground to the right place and then replaced with a new one.

Disadvantages: high cost, low economic benefits

  • New processing technology: laser cladding

Advantages: high temperature and wear resistance, corrosion resistance, oxidation resistance, no peeling, no steel sticking, no nodules, good roller surface quality, guaranteed plate and strip quality, long service life, improved economic benefits

Step mat

Application: hot rolling mill step pads

  • Original process: quenching

Disadvantages: Step angle is easy to crack, not corrosion-resistant, high offline rate.

  • New process: laser cladding

Advantages: wear-resistant, corrosion-resistant, offline rate reduced by 30%-50%

Rolling mill arch

Application: Roller changing side stand of rolling mill

  • Original process: welding rod cladding repair

Disadvantages: easy to crack, easy to form pores, low efficiency

  • New process: laser cladding

Advantages: wide selection of powder materials, improved product quality, wear resistance, not easy to crack, no pores, small deformation, mechanization to improve efficiency

Roller

Application: bar, wire, profile roll

  • Original processing technology: Direct turning after wear until it cannot be used and scrapped

Disadvantages: High cost, low economic benefits

  • New processing technology: Laser alloying

Advantages: Wear-resistant, corrosion-resistant, no peeling, no deformation, good roller surface quality, long service life.

Bearing seat, skateboard

Application: Bearing seats of cold rolling support rolls and working rolls and slides next to the bearing seats

  • Original process: welding rod cladding repair

Disadvantages: prone to cracking

  • New process: laser cladding

Advantages: wide selection of powder materials, improved product quality

Application: rolling mill transmission shaft, gear shaft, wheel, scissors, hollow roller, flat head cover, reducer housing and other bearings with wear

  • Original process: welding rod surfacing repair

Disadvantages: easy to crack

  • New process: laser cladding

Advantages: Laser surface remanufacturing technology has excellent comprehensive performance, wide selection of powder materials, improved product quality, wear resistance, small deformation, high bonding strength, not easy to crack, etc.
